On Behalf of | Aug 30, 2018 | US Immigration Law

There are many reasons why foreign nationals come to the United States. While some seek to just visit and sight-see, others seek to make their move permanent, as they have nothing back at home. In some cases, immigrants decided to leave their home as a means to obtain a better life and escape persecution. While this means entering the country legally, coming to the U.S. to seek asylum is a legal options for those seeking refuge.

Asylum seekers come to the U.S. at Chicago and other cities cross the nation. The reason for seeking asylum might be different from one immigrant to another. However, in order to be an asylum seeker, he or she must meet this definition: He or she must have suffered persecution or fear that they will suffer persecution based on his or her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion.

Those eligible for asylum are able to enter the U.S. and file for asylum once inside the nation. This means that the proper paperwork must be filed within a year or their arrival. It is also possible to include a spouse or any children that are in the U.S. with them in their application.

Immigration law can be complex. Even more so, it is likely challenging for immigrants to navigate. Because of this, it is vital that immigrants seeking asylum take the time to fully explore this option and determine their best course of action so they can legally remain in the U.S. and get the help they need moving forward.
