Do you need a work permit to work in the U.S.?

On Behalf of | Nov 8, 2021 | US Immigration Law

Immigration law in the United States can be extraordinarily complex and therefore challenging to understand. Yet, successfully navigating it could mean the difference between building the life you always envisioned for yourself and your family and being removed from the country altogether. That’s why you have to understand the law and how to stay on the right side of it.

Obtaining a U.S. work permit

This is especially true when it comes to employment in the U.S. While you might have a work visa that permits you to stay in the country for a certain period of time, your loved ones may not have that visa. If they don’t, or if you don’t, then you might want to consider seeking out a work permit.

To obtain a work permit, you simply have to submit an application. However, within that application you must specify how you qualify for a work permit. Generally speaking, anyone who is seeking an adjustment in status, such as an individual who is seeking asylum or a fiancé of a visa holder, qualifies for a work permit.

Failing to obtain a work permit

Choosing to work in the U.S. without the proper authorization can put your immigration status in jeopardy. You can be denied a green card, and you may even be placed into removal proceedings that could ultimately lead to your deportation. Therefore, you need to take the application process seriously and make sure that you’re doing everything appropriately under the law.

We know that it can be stressful to deal with these matters, but you don’t have to face the process alone. Experienced immigration attorneys stand ready to help you navigate the complexities of the immigration system so that you can rest assured that your interests are as fully protected as is possible under the circumstances.
