Understanding student visa options and requirements

Visiting America is often a goal of many foreigners. In some cases, nationals from other countries seek to come to the U.S. for more than just a limited visit as a tourist. Because there are many opportunities in Illinois and other states, immigrants will enter the U.S. with a specific visa, allowing them to remain in the country for a longer period of time. Because there are excellent educational opportunities, some immigrants will come to the country with a student visa.

There are two categories of student visas. The first is a F-1 visa. This is for an academic student and allows them to enter the nation as a full time student following acceptance into a college, university, seminary, conservatory, high school, elementary school or any other academic institution it is also available for those admitted to a language training program.

Not only must one be enrolled in one of these programs, the Student and Exchange visitor Program must approve the school or institution. Finally, they must be enrolled as a full-time student, be proficient in English or enrolled in courses that will lead to English proficiency, have sufficient funds to support him or herself for the entire duration of study and he or she must maintain their residence abroad and must have no intention to give it up.

In contrast, a M-1 student visa is for vocational students. This includes students enrolled in vocational or other non-academic programs besides language training programs. The requirements for this visa are the same as those listed above for the F-1 visa.

Those seeking to enter the U.S. as a student should ensure that they understand the process. This means taking the time to understand the requirements, ensuring they are met when applying for a specific visa. Those dealing with this matter or any other immigration law matter should take the time to understand their options and rights in the matter.
